MOSAiC Expedition Data Submissions

This page was specifically created to address the specific needs of data collected during the MOSAiC expedition. For general submission instructions, please refer to the submission guidelines page.

Current Action Items:

For each dataset you intend to submit, please email us at support@arcticdata.io with “MOSAiC – NSF award number” in the subject line:

  1. Dataset title(s)
    • Include the topic, geographic location, dates, and if applicable, the scale of the data. Write out all abbreviations.
Example: Snow height on sea ice, meteorological conditions and drift of sea ice from autonomous measurements from buoy 2019S95, deployed during MOSAiC expedition 2019 – 2020
  2. Location of files on MCS (if applicable)
    • Example: /isibhv/platforms/path/here/
  3. Data collection and publication schedule
    • Date collection finished

If you haven’t already included this before:

  • The approximate date you plan to submit and publish your dataset
  • The number of files in your dataset
  • The total size of your dataset

Timeline

  • All metadata and data can be kept private up until your NSF award deadline.
  • If you have questions about the deadlines, please contact us.

Progress Tracking

We’ll track your dataset progress in a Google sheet for the entire expedition.

FAQ

For more information, please see the general Arctic Data Center FAQ.

Q: Data of this type is usually stored in repository X. How should we handle the submissions to the Arctic Data Center?

A: NSF requires metadata for all Arctic supported data sets to be submitted to the NSF Arctic Data Center. We can potentially help replicate that metadata to the Arctic Data Center. Please get in touch with the Arctic Data Center Support for further information relevant to your situation.

Q: If there might be multiple versions of the data published (e.g. initial version v0 has uncertainty of 5 cm, subsequent version v1 has uncertainty of 2 cm), how is that handled?

A: All of our datasets are versioned so we can connect the two in a version chain to show that v0 is a previous version of v1. On the v0 page we will have a clear banner that forwards users to the latest version of the dataset. However, if you would like to have both versions discoverable and searchable we can have two separate datasets with unique DOIs.

Q: Multiple groups (one is based in the US and one group is outside of the US) are working on different parts of the same dataset. Where should we submit our data?

A: We would want to make sure that the entire dataset is discoverable in one place. Please get in contact with us to discuss what would be the best way forward.

Q: Will data submitted to the Arctic Data Center automatically be linked to PANGAEA?

A: Yes that is correct, the data and metadata will only need to be submitted once. The Arctic Data Center team will be handling the transfer to PANGAEA.

Q: I have several datasets to submit with similar metadata; can this be automated?

A: Yes, we can help with that. You can start a submission on https://arcticdata.io/catalog/submit. Then, please get in touch at support@arcticdata.io with what datasets you hope to create.

Q: I have data on the MCS; do I still need to submit the data again?

A: You can start a submission on https://arcticdata.io/catalog/submit and fill out only the metadata portion. Then, please get in touch at support@arcticdata.io with the path to your MCS data.

Q: Will there be a general MOSAiC data portal in addition to individual project specific portals?

A: We will be working to create that in the coming months. Please stay tuned!
