The Collaborative O-Buoy Project: O-Buoy Deployment Atmospheric Ozone Contact: John Halfacre jhalfacr@purdue.edu, Paul Shepson pshepson@purdue.edu Data files are named by year and contain all of the available records for that year. The data files are comprised of atmospheric ozone observations with following columns [units]. The file format and units are described at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/docs/userguide/data/TextPointData.html Final ozone data report the following headers: Time[fmt="yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss z"],Latitude[unit="deg"],Longitude[unit="deg"],O3_mole_fraction[unit="nanomole/mole"],O3_uncertainty[unit="nanomole/mole"],cell_temp[unit="Celsius"],cell_pressure[unit="torr"],flow_rate[unit="mL/min"] Level 1 data and final O-buoy1 data 2009-02 - 2009-05 report the following headers Time[fmt="yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss z"],Latitude[unit="deg"],Longitude[unit="deg"],mixing_ratio[unit="ppb"],cell_temp[unit="Celsius"],cell_pressure[unit="mbar"],flow_rate[unit="m/s"],status1(Text),status2(Text) The following buoy deployments have final ozone data posted on ACADIS: O-buoy1 2009-2010 O-buoy2 2010-2011 (Data from 2010-11 through 2011-03 are limited due to buoy power issues) O-buoy3 2010-2011 (2011 data limted due to ozone instrument failure) O-buoy4 2010-2012 O-buoy5 2011-2012 (2012 data limited due to buoy power failure) O-buoy6 2012 (data limited due to instrument failure) O-buoy7 2012-2013 (no data 2012 Sept - 2013 May due to discharged buoy batteries. Ozone instrument failed 2013-07-19) O-buoy8 2012-2013 (no data 2013 Jan - 2013 June due to discharged buoy batteries) All other data are unfiltered, level 1 data. Final data will be fully populated and deposited at the end of each deployment. Data have some time periods masked according to list in "buoy-mask.csv" which is available by request. In that file, "what" refers the instrumentation to be masked where "any" (or "all"), "co2", "gps", "met", "ozone", etc. t0 and t1 mark the start and end points of the masked periods. Instrument warm-up was defined as 30 minutes from power on. If the instrument was not powered for longer than 90 minutes, instrument is considered cool. Warm-up periods were removed from final data as data are considerably noisey during this period. Instruments are generally field calibrated at time of deployment and subjected to the applicable, initial calibration curve during level 1 processing. Field calibrations are performed by connecting a 2B 306 Ozone Calibration Source ozone generator to the O-buoy's filter holder and sampling known concentrations of ozone. A calibration curve is generated from those points, as presented below (y is the ozone monitor's reading and x is the true value). Level 1 data already have these calibration factors applied. *Note: There are deployments for which valid, in-field calibrations do not exist. In such cases, we assume an uncertainty based on our historical record of the variability of calibration slopes and zeroes for identical O-buoy ozone instruments. An uncertainty of +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb** should be used for these data. This applies to the following: O-buoy 1: Deployment 2 O-buoy 2: Deployment 1 O-buoy 3: Deployment 1 O-buoy 4: Deployment 1 O-buoy 7: Deployment 1 O-buoy 8: Deployment 1 O-buoy 9: Deployment 1 O-buoy 10: Deployment 1 O-buoy 11: Deployment 1 O-buoy 12: Deployment 1 Starting with O-buoy7, buoys have been fitted with a different style filter holder. On average, these filter holders cause the ozone signal to read low by about 2%. This factor and its associated uncertainty are included with buoys made after O-buoy 7. ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 1 Deployment 1 Start date: 2009-02-06 End date: 2009-05-19 Location: 71.34N 156.54W (Barrow, AK) Calibration factor: y = 0.975x + 5.0093 Deployment 2 Start date: 2009-10-09 End date: 2010-07-14 Location: 77.06N 135.31W (Beaufort Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 2 Deployment 1 Start date: 2010-10-08 End date: 2011-05-19 Location: 74.26N 142.27W (Beaufort Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 3 Deployment 1 Start date: 2010-02-19 End date: 2010-03-28 Location: 58.75N 94.07W (Hudson Bay) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* Deployment 2 Start date: 2011-02-21 End date: 2011-04-27 Location: 58.75N 94.07W (Hudson Bay) Calibration factor: y = 0.8922x - 0.04466 ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 4 Deployment 1 Start date: 2010-04-03 End date: 2010-04-30 Location: 78.26N 112.06W (Bordon Island) Calibration factor: y = +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* Deployment 2 Start date: 2011-09-02 End date: NA Location: 87.88N 158.66W (North Pole) Calibration factor: y = 0.904x - 1.4097 ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 5 Deployment 1 Start date: 2011-08-05 End date: 2012-01-19 Location: 78.01N 139.94W (Beaufort Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1.0086x + 0.241 ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 6 Deployment 1 Start date: 2012-04-10 End date: NA Location: 89.69N 11.68E (North Pole) Calibration factor: y = 0.9564x + 0.8441 ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 7 Deployment 1 Start date: 2012-08-27 End date: 2013-11-13 Location: 80.9N 137.4W (Beaufort Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 8 Deployment 1 Start date: 2012-08-28 End date: 2013-08-07 Location: 80.2N 130.0W (Beaufort Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 9 Deployment 1 Start date: 2013-09-03 End date: NA Location: 80.2N 155.68E (East Siberian Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 10 Deployment 1 Start date: 2013-08-24 End date: NA Location: 76.9N 138.9W (Beaufort Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 11 Deployment 1 Start date: 2014-10-07 End date: NA Location: 79.4N 140.2W (Beaufort Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* ------------------------------------------------------------------- O-buoy 12 Deployment 1 Start date: 2014-10-11 End date: NA Location: 76.0N 139.8W (Beaufort Sea) Calibration factor: y = 1x +/- 1.8% + 2.1 ppb* **Uncertainty was estimated by summing the average of the relative slope error between correctly calibrated insturments, and the average uncertainty in blanks between field deployed instruments (as they performed daily blanks).
