Taking in Photos in Manual Mode

If you have a camera (rather than a cell phone) taking pictures need some extra consideration on how to use a tripod, aperture, shutter speed, etc. There are many YouTube videos that you can watch on using a camera and manual mode, but let's hear from Sean Tucker on how that works.

If you are not interested in this, or don't plan on using a camera for this course, just advance to the next page.

Using a Tripod

  • If you have a tripod -
    • Use an aperture of f/10 to f16.  These are common apertures to get most of the image in focus.
    • Then play with shutter and ISO to get a combination of creative shutter you want and ISO to get the right exposure for that combination of aperture and shutter speed.
  • If you don't, then shoot hand-held so your settings permit you to shoot with at least a 1/100th of a second shutter speed or faster.
  • If you are using a cell phone, be sure to steady it on something. A friend's shoulder, a rock or a little box or chair you carry along.
