Helen Roos

Welcome to Our People, Our Climate!

As your facilitator, I am here to support your learning as you make your way through this online course.  

Helen holds a B.A. Hons. (Western), M.A. Thesis (Western) and is a candidate in the Doctor of Education (Adult Learning) (Calgary), with a specialization in online culturally-relevant learning.  

Helen first moved to Nunavut in June 1999 until 2015, and co-managed the $40M Inuit workforce development program NUHRDS (Nunavut Unified Human Resources Development Program) and as the Director for the Nunavut Regional Office for he Department of Canadian Heritage.  Throughout her career she worked in Inuit and Northern policy, research, program delivery and intergovernmental affairs.  She always continued her passion to support indigenous capacity building for youth, women, communities and professionals throughout her 20-year career in the federal government.  

She has also held careers in the Nunavut territorial and Ontario provincial governments, but in 2012, established her consulting, research and training firm and relocated back to Iqaluit in 2015, to focus on Inuit youth pre-employment training.  

Since 2015, her team has designed and delivered competency-based and innovative learning for Inuit youth and Nunavummiut to build pre-employment capacity and work placements.  ilinniapaa has delivered the Labour Market Agreement for Peoples with Disabilities (2015-2017) for the Government of Nunavut; and 4 pre-employment projects in NWT and Nunavut including Skills Link, Career Focus and the Inuit Community Support Worker and Management Trainee program, supporting over 275 Inuit youth aged 15 to 30, and adults, in our programs.  

Alongside the programs, ilinniapaa delivers professional certificate training for those employed including occupational health and safety, Microsoft Office and a range of other topics to build confidence and capacity for Nunavut's workplace.
