Competency-based Learning

In all courses that ilinniapaa Skills Development Centre develops, we highlight and integrate information on what competencies: the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) you need to work in the field or sector the course is related to.  This helps you to understand what courses, programs, learning or prior experience is needed to additional formal education or work.  There are certainly different ways to build your KSAs, but if you are interested in working in one of the many organizations in Nunavut, from government, community-based research projects, Inuit organizations or environmental advocacy or business, knowing what you need to develop or profile, is key!

Climate change officers or professionals have different responsibilities depending on the extent to which the organization’s climate-related risks and opportunities fall within the roles and responsibilities of the job. The following sets of knowledge, experience, and skills encompass the most comprehensive set of responsibilities. Professionals for whom only part of their job duties pertain to climate will need to demonstrate specific subsets of each category.

Foundational Knowledge Workers need to develop science literacy, environmental literacy, knowledge of the policy landscape in the international, national Canadian, provincial/territorial and local community context, and management skills (in management roles)
Organizational Knowledge and Experience Workers need to think strategically about the past, present and future trends, decision-making, risk management and compliance, how to manage financial resources and equipment, communications, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and organizational governance
Strategic Execution Because climate change is all about - change - people working in the field need to understand how to support organizational change in projects such as strategic planning, engaging stakeholders including government, researchers, technologists, community members and other external partners, and writing and implementing policy.

Depending on your interests, there are many careers in the field of climate change.

If you are interested in pursuing further education to be a climate change officer or professional, see the full list from the Association of Climate Change Officers.
